Molosser, the Barest of Bones, a Restoration of Faith

Solid Gold is the first of four releases from the Barebones session this month - stripped down acoustic and live versions. I should hate the Barebones Sessions. I don't, I love it. But I should. Molosser have been on my radar for months. I think they were my favourite artist last year, or nearly so, partly for their own original material which is provocative, atmospheric and compelling, and partly for their superb cover of Back In Black. Seriously, go listen now. They are spare, bare. A haunting voice with haunting words, detuned guitars and the subtle brush of drums. Barebones is a new release. They have taken songs that already existed and were good, and remade them as acoustic sessions. I have ranted and raved about this in the past. The release of an album of acoustic versions by the Cure was the moment I consigned them to the Coldplay bin. There they remain. So what is compelling about this release? Well two things. Twin Moons, the Crude Molosser

I have a number of reasons to dislike this. I will explain them and you know how the format goes I will finish by gushing with praise. Fuck me, 2023 is turning into a good year, already I have THREE songs that in normal years would be fighting to be my song of the year. Molosser I have liked before. I think one of the first reviews I did after I gave up on photocopying my fanzine and trying to sell it in venues and I went to the world of the internet, was Molosser. I have been clinically dead twice since then. Possibly it happened. It was early. I loved the tenderness and the violence of their music. Seductive and dangerous. It is easy to drop pairs of words together in English and make yourself sound clever. Artful and innocent. Tuneful and dissonant. They were all those things . I also remember saying that I wanted to hear a whole new album exploring their ideas and their direction. Food on the Floor. Nasty.

Yes, yes, yes, they are back. With the depressing regularity of a cheap watch 9 o'clock Nasty pop up like Meerkats, hurl another song to me and wait expectantly for a response. I once promised them to preview all their new songs. They wanted my words for their press release. Never did I for one moment think they would survive for more than two wet farts. But they turn out to be resilient and fecund. The new single is called Food on the Floor. It is only the single by accident. But I can explain that after I tell you about the song. It starts simply enough. A bright guitar lead, upbeat drums. The shadow of a grinding bass to remind us that we are not in the mainstream. The vocals begin playful. But then the song uncoils and just as you take a breath it delivers the purest pop punch. It evokes drinking, laughter and violence tinged with the inconsolable regret for a lost friend. If you ever get blind drunk at a funeral, this song will be the soundtrack. All this is true. I like it. T...
